Goji Berries: Properties and Benefits

The goji berries are the fruit of a plant belonging to the Solanaceae family known as Lycium barbarum;  in Asia, and particularly in China, goji berries are well known in the pharmacopoeia for their therapeutic properties and their benefits on human health.

The goji berries, also known as the "longevity fruit" grows spontaneously in the eastern regions, from Mongolia to the Himalayas, Tibet and Chinese regions.

The fruit of goji berries is special, it has a bright red color reminiscent of cherries or some type of chili, while the shape is rounded but elongated, reminiscent of the olives; the dimensions instead are similar to those of wild cherries.

The goji berries contain water, protein, fiber, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, flavonoids, steroids and polysaccharides.  The minerals present in goji berries are iron, potassium, zinc and selenium.

The goji berries contain 18 amino acids among which are included the nine essential amino acids: threonine, tryptophan, lysine, isoleucine, methionine, valine, phenylalanine, histidine and leucine.

With regard to the vitamins goji berries contains C vitamin, some B vitamins and vitamin E (vitamin C and vitamin E have antioxidant properties).

In goji berries there are also linoleic acid, a substance with antioxidant properties that can be beneficial to the immune system.

Benefits and Curative Properties of Goji Berries

From the properties of the substances contained in goji berries we can see that the health benefits that can be gained from their use can be many.

First we must point out that among all the fruits in the world goji berries are the ones that contain the highest percentage of antioxidants;  this property, in addition to combat free radicals, slows down the aging of cells and is a useful tool to combat the onset of many diseases.  Thanks to these characteristics that goji berries are also called "the fruit of longevity."

Thanks to an abundance of polysaccharides and minerals, goji berries have energetic, revitalizing and invigorating properties, and are therefore recommended in cases of weakness and psycho-physical stress.

The fruits of Lycium barbarum also have a positive effect on memory and sleep quality.

The goji berries also help to combat allergies, have anti-inflammatory properties, stimulate the metabolism and digestive functions.

The properties of goji berries and its benefits have been known since ancient times; it seems that in China the properties of the berries were known as early as 2600 BC.

The goji berries, thanks to their properties, may be considered a substitute for the various all-natural supplements in tablet.

The goji berries belong to the Solanaceae family, the same which belong to,tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant and red pepper.

The goji berries can be eaten fresh, or alternatively dried; in the Western market are also present in the form of juices.
Goji Berries and Antioxidants
As noted above goji berries have high antioxidant properties and in this regard there is an american scientific medical test, developed by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), which measures the responsiveness of the antioxidants present in food.

The test is called the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) and based on the analysis, goji berries are placed in the first place well ahead of the other fruits containing antioxidants (blueberries, raspberries, pomegranate, etc ..)
