The summer melon is divided into 2 categories:

  • the Net, characterized precisely by a peel pervaded by an interweaving of lines in relief and by an intense and particularly fragrant and tasty yellow pulp.
  • the Cantaloupe which, unlike the net, has a smooth skin and a slightly lighter flesh.

In contrast to the summer melon we find the winter one , which owes its name to the period in which it ripens, December. The pulp of this variety is rather whitish.

Melon: Properties and Benefits

The most fragrant and tasty melon is the male specimen. This is usually characterized by a black dot visible on the opposite side from its petiole.

The melon can be stored in the refrigerator for 3/4 days. Care must be taken to separate it from other foods as its strong perfume could be absorbed by the latter.

Two or three slices of melon are able to provide the complete daily requirement of vitamins A and C for our body.

Thanks to its content of dietary fiber, vitamins and its low caloric intake, the melon  fills the stomach without weighing it down

Cantalupo melons owe their name to the homonymous town in Lazio where it seems it was introduced in the fifteenth century by missionaries from Asia.

Although in most of the world this fruit is consumed to taste its sweet and tasty pulp, it is not so everywhere. There are some areas of the world where the fruit is very popular because of its seeds.  These are in fact consumed as snacks in some areas of Central America, Asia and the Middle East.

Maybe Not Everyone Knows That

The winter melons, if picked not yet ripe, can be kept for 4 or 5 months until they mature.

The formation of most sugars occurs a few days before ripening. If the melon is harvested before this period, there will be a fruit with a tasteless and little sweet taste on the table.

The melon is also used in the field of cosmetics for the preparation of beauty masks that can tone the skin and make it softer.

Probably due to the presence of numerous seeds, this fruit, in ancient times, was considered a symbol of fertility and prosperity.

According to Pliny’s writings, it seems that the Roman emperor Tiberius was particularly greedy for this succulent fruit.
