Grapefruit: Properties and Benefits

The grapefruit tree is an evergreen native to China, its trunk can reach a height of 15 meters and it grows a bit all over the world, where the temperate climate allows.

The grapefruit tree belongs to the Rutaceae family and the three main varieties are represented by Citrus decumana, Citrus grandis and Citrus maxima.

The grapefruit flowers are white, composed of four petals, while the fruit, yellow, normally has a diameter measuring from 10 to 15 cm and segments slightly yellow, almost colorless.

Grapefruit is rich in fiber and vitamins A, B, and C and especially flavonoids, substances with antioxidants properties that help the liver and prevent the onset of cardiovascular disease; the most abundant flavonoid in grapefruit is naringenin, which has antioxidant and anticancer properties. In addition to naringenin grapefruit also contains a substance called limonene, responsible for the sour taste, but also with therapeutic properties.

In addition to these substances, in grapefruit there are mineral salts such as calcium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, sodium, chlorine, iron, copper. The peel contains essential oils such as limonene, citral and pinene which has antidepressant properties.



Benefits and Curative Properties of Grapefruit

Surely the grapefruit is a precious food with disinfectant and stimulating properties of the digestive system, for this reason it is recommended to take it after a meal, especially if abundant.

The intake of grapefruit is recommended in cases of poor appetite, nutrition of the elderly, difficult digestion, liver disorders, kidney failure, fragile capillaries, and lung infections.

Thanks to its properties grapefruit is a food indicated after meal for overweight people, as it accelerates the conversion of fat into energy.  When taken in correct doses along with caffeine, such as a tablespoon of grapefruit juice in a cup of coffee, it becomes an excellent analgesic with few contraindications.

It is not yet completely clear the behavior as regards its use in therapies detoxifying from drugs; some active ingredients, including bergamottin and naringenin, would be able to calm partly the withdrawal symptoms, as if they were a kind of methadone natural.
Grapefruit seed extract (Esp)
The extract of grapefruit seed, contains naringin, the kaempferol, hesperidin, nobiletin, and parucirina; also contains some types of bioflavonoids, the most effective among the 20,000 existing types. The extract of grapefruit seed, thanks to its properties, is used primarily to treat the infection by fungi, mold and even viruses. Its use is specifically targeted to the care of infection caused by the fungus Candida albicans that spreads normally when the body is subjected to heavy stress, to damage of the bacterial flora or prolonged use of antibiotics.  The seed extract strengthens the immune system attacks the intestinal parasites and it is used for internal infections, of skin, eye and mouth.

Research in the field of toxicological confirmed that the extract of grapefruit seed has no toxicity and can be hired for a longer period of time only as a preventive measure, taking advantage of all the properties.

The seed extract is available commercially in powder and liquid; preferable to powder, as the liquid tastes extremely bitter and unpleasant.

In 1964, an American immunologist named Jacob Harich, he realized, in his garden, in a pile of decaying composting material, the grapefruit seed present were not subject to any mutation, in practice they were not decomposed as the whole other material. 

He realized that within the grapefruit seed was present a substance with antibiotic properties but at the same time not harmful. After several studies of grapefruit seeds  their antibacterial were confirmed and according to herbalists, the grapefruit seed extract can be considered true natural antibiotics without any side effects.
